7-6-07 Run, Hide, the Terrorists Are Here!

Are we at war? Is the army coming? Have the terrorists arrived? Is there an escaped serial killer loose in the woods? What’s with the big scary helicopter, flying low, flying in circles, disturbing the peace all over the county, terrorizing our kids and our farm animals, robbing people of their privacy for part of an otherwise peaceful and uneventful evening? Folks, welcome to the world of police state surveillance. OK, this is just a WILD guess, but unless I’m all wet (and it’s not raining at the moment)I’d have to say that was a POT CHOPPER that just robbed us all of our privacy and peace of mind. Hunting the EVIL WEED. O-o-o-oh, boogymans!!!! We’re all gonna die!

So, how do all you regular everyday citizens of Calhoun County like being under the watchful eye of “Big Brother”? Because they weren’t just looking for herbal nasties while they were up there with their scopes, they were looking for anything at all. They have high powered binoculars and probably heat seeking gizmos too, designed just for spying on you and me. Heck, they can probably look right in your window and see you changing your clothes or getting out of the shower. Ain’t it grand? And the funny thing, just supposing somebody WAS growing something nature intended and government outlawed? Wouldn’t the very presence of these extremely intimidating machines (both mechanical AND human) be enough to send folks scurrying into the ding weeds to PULL up or cut down their despicable gardens before someone else does? (Thereby not eliminating much of anything)…

Back in 1984, the pot choppers flew hot and heavy in these parts. And for several years after. We’ve all had  experiences with these militaristic scare tactics before. And after talking it to death between literally hundreds of folks, we all came to the conclusion that MOSTLY these guys are just flying around trying to scare people and burning up taxpayers money in fuel and manpower, when in reality, they don’t generally find much of anything. It’s all just about show-of-force.

But do the citizens of this county really NEED or WANT to be watched so heavily from above? (I mean after all, you guys ain’t GOD or anything.) Because let’s face it, if they’re out to get you, it’s damn hard to hide from a helicopter. And if you are minding your own business and just having a nice peaceful barbecue, or you’re skinny dipping in a private farm pond somewhere, or having a bit of afternoon delight with your lady love out in some remote field, they’ll be right there looking. Don’t-cha feel special?

  1. I find it amazing, personally, that local entities even waste the gas to look around when all they have to do is log onto Goggle Earth and zoom down on all of us via satellite.

Of course, Google Earth doesn’t have the heat detectors to point out those lovely herbs.

  2. 7-7-07 Helicopter update.

After speaking with several folks who experienced the low flying helicopter yesterday, one man stated “they flew so low around our place that we could see that there was some kind of GUN mounted on the side. We were having a cookout when they came. It was just plain harassment…”

Another individual states he saw a machine gun, and that the side door was open. He could see individuals inside.

Other people with police scanners reported that the police actually gave information about specific names of people to be targeted and also information about there being “five police cars full of cops” waiting to bust these particular named individuals.

Now, there are several things to point out here.
First of all, this was a LARGE helicopter, equipped with a machine gun. Not the type of chopper you would expect to be simply searching for pot. Secondly, this would NOT be the right time of year for easy spotting of “illegal” plants. They simply would not be anywhere near big enough. It would be like searching for a needle in a haystack.

For those of you who are “scanner illiterate”, it is reported by MANY scanner owners that when the police are preparing to make an actual raid on a location their common practice is to switch to a different “secret” frequency so that no one will be able to get certain information and possibly warn the individuals who are being raided. This apparently was NOT done in this case. As of yet, no raids have been reported anywhere, so it would appear THAT was not really the intention.

Which can lead to only one conclusion. They WANTED to be seen, make their presence FELT as well as known. They WANTED people to see the gun. They made announcements over the common scanner frequency which had no earthly purpose other than to intimidate and harass targeted individuals.

This obviously was a warning or a threat. Comments made across the scanner appear to have actually been a form of “public slander”. The police are FULLY aware that MANY households have scanners, and so names and places mentioned would be broadcast far and wide. There are only two reasons for this. Either they are completely inept, or they were simply playing mind games. Which IS harassment, no matter how you look at it.

There is another angle to this story as well. Just think how MANY people there are just in this county alone who are WAR VETERANS. Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome is a very common malady among veterans, something like 40% of all vets have it. This is a very serious and difficult to control disorder. This low flying helicopter complete with gun is the perfect thing to trigger an attack of PTSD for someone with this problem.

Years ago, when the pot choppers were flying regularly, some folks in this county who had a horse farm had the experience of helicopters frightening their horses so badly that one of them went over a rock cliff and broke it’s leg.

Doesn’t it make all you taxpayers out there just happier-n-shit to know that your hard earned tax dollars are being spent on scaring people and animals and playing mind games? Doesn’t it make you feel secure and safe knowing that there are helicopters flying around with guns ready to shoot at a moments notice?

Anyone else with info regarding this invasion of privacy is encouraged to post it here.

  3. Isn’t there some kind of regulation as to HOW LOW these guys can fly?

I believe there is, but have no idea where to find it.

  4. Someone should build a sidewinder model in their yard for them to see.

  5. Update… State and County Cops were swarming the Mary Bowe property, Russet Road on Friday with the Helicopter hovering over head… Shot Guns in hand.

  6. Update – Low flying helicopter reported hovering over Ripley Road in Roane County the same day. Rumored raid on a farm. Still no media reports on any raids in either county…

  7. I find it amazing that we had armed military type helicopters flying surveillance over two counties, disturbed, threatened and harassed umpteen people, and NO ONE can find out what was going on.

  8. Update
    At LAST some info.

    But not from the authorities.
    Thanks to Bob Weaver.

Police reportedly staged a marijuana plant seizure near Rt. 7 between Russett and Stumptown Friday.

Sources at the scene said a helicopter made several fly-overs above wooded areas along Steer Creek-Rush Run, indicating marijuana was spotted in specific areas.

Local residents indicated a large number of marijuana plants were confiscated by officers.

Several officers including the WV State Police participated in the search and seizure.

State Police Public Affairs Officer Sgt. J. C. Powers did NOT respond to a request for public information.
